Peru (Spanish: Perú, Quechua: Piruw, Aymara: Piruw), officially the Republic of Peru (Spanish: República del Perú, pronounced [reˈpuβlika ðel peˈɾu] ( listen)), is a country in western South America. It is bordered on the north by Ecuador and Colombia, on the east by Brazil, on the southeast by Bolivia, on the south by Chile, and on the west by the Pacific Ocean. Peruvian territory was home to the Norte Chico civilization, one of the oldest in the world, and to the Inca Empire, the largest state in Pre-Columbian America. The Spanish Empire conquered the region in the 16th century and established a Viceroyalty, which included most of its South American colonies. After achieving independence in 1821, Peru has undergone periods of political unrest and fiscal crisis as well as periods of stability and economic upswing. Peru is a representative democratic republic divided into 25 regions. Its geography varies from the arid plains of the Pacific coast to the peaks of the Andes mountains and the tropical forests of the Amazon Basin. It is a developing country with a medium Human Development Index score and a poverty level around 36%. Its main economic activities include agriculture, fishing, mining, and manufacturing of products such as textiles. The Peruvian population, estimated at 29 million, is multiethnic, including Amerindians, Europeans, Africans and Asians. The main spoken language is Spanish, although a significant number of Peruvians speak Quechua or other native languages. This mixture of cultural traditions has resulted in a wide diversity of expressions in fields such as art, cuisine, literature, and music. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License How do I go about purchasing a computer in Peru when I live in America? Q. I want to buy a computer system, including a monitor, keyboard, mouse, and printer, for a boy's family who lives in Peru. I live in America and can't fly down there to buy one. I need some names of reputable computer stores that have locations ideally all over Peru, because I don't know which city he lives in, and I need price ranges for a system already loaded with Spanish Windows. What I would basically do is try to get a quote from a computer store, and then send the money to this boy with the information about where his father or mother could purchase it. Could anyone please help me? Asked by Iamnotarobot (former believer) - Sat Feb 10 20:59:50 2007 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments A. Find out the city because lots of areas in Peru don't have access to large stores like here, only large cities. If he's in Lima (the capital), you can order from it's a very large widely known electronic store. Other than that you should consider buying it here (maybe order from a Miami store - they have spanish) and ship it down there. It's probably cheaper Answered by BeachGirl - Sun Feb 11 02:04:48 2007 What are some activist organizations in India and Peru? Q. I would like to do community organizing and human rights law advocacy. Anywhere in India or Peru is fine with me. Asked by Cymone B - Fri Feb 1 19:37:09 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Check out an organisation called the Human Rights Law Network, they have offices in Bangalore (in your other question you said you're moving here). There's also another place worth checking out that's the Alternative Law Forum. CRY - Child Rights and You is a very well known and sincere NGO too, but their hq is in Bombay, however, they do have a Blr office. There's also something called HHS (some long Kannada name that I can never remember but they do a lot of work with legal assistance on women's issues like sexual harassment etc). Another well known activist organisation is Vimochana. You could also check out Dream A Dream which is for kids (more of a community thing than activism) .. there are actually tons so I can't list all ..… [cont.] Answered by askios007 - Mon Feb 4 13:48:29 2008 Does anyone know anything or have any experience traveling in Peru as a female?
Q. I'm an adventurous female going to Peru in a few weeks and am wondering about the safety situation for females. I'm traveling with another female friend and while we're both tough and fairly travel-savvy, I'm just looking for any advice, or better yet personal experiences concerning safety. Thanks! Asked by SoCalSkier - Wed Jun 18 15:07:14 2008 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments A. Don't stress, Peru is not dangerous at all. I travelled through it solo and found it quite safe. You will get some attention from the local men, but they mean no harm so just learn to deal with it. And be careful with you're stuff especially when travelling on buses because if you're not it will get stolen. But other than that just have fun!
